lyrics

“The Children of Indigo”
by Ben Yisrael

There was once a woman who ate the sky
Drank its deep blue oceans
and became intoxicated with its wonder.
She ate until her skin became darker,
richer than all earthly beings.
They called her the color Indigo.

She passed down its deep hues
On the tips of her fingerprints to her children.
And they adopted a similar brilliance
as their mother.
Indigo is not easily diluted.

They used their indigo to paint the world
in palaces, pyramids, and ziggurats.
From Ethiopia, and Egypt to Peru.
They stained the world with the wonderful sapphire dye.
More precious than gold
But they mined the sky so deeply
They became drunk on Heaven

Touching the sky
has its beauty and its perils
Glory can be a fool’s gold
that helps you lose
touch with earthly obligations.
They lost their connection to the lands
They lost their connections with each other

merchants jealous of their color captured them
Comfortably sold her children
across the earth for rum and sugar.
Leaving the once clear waters blue
From those who jumped overboard
Shipping them along the sea and river banks.
Locked in stocks in bondage. Banking on my ancestors
The original stocks and bonds as deposits.

Even in the face of insurmountable cruelty.
These children learned to drown suffering in rhythm.
And weaved joy in the fabric of suffering.
Your cotton and tobacco fields
Your denim jeans are stained with her fingerprints.

The rock and hip hop you dance to.
The jazz you enjoy on lazy Sundays
was born from their spirituals.
They took their Blues and made
a magic called song

And everywhere their music touched
became their culture
Indigo is not easily diluted.
All the times we were knocked to earth
we became stronger
Our enemies knew
if left unchained we would touch the sky. Again.

And So all paths lead us back to the way where the bluebirds fly.
And Indigo’s children can be found in all the places where the sun kisses their skin.
By golden sun and blue ocean
And We found our home again. Yes, our former selves built pyramids and temples as portals
so we could go back to the future. Our future. The treasure that could only be found within.
And Joy, joy comes in the morning.

We learned there is no need to wait on the world for our coronation.
Our crown has been passed down in our fingerprints.

And we shine more brilliant with each day. Our color is not easily diluted.
